2016 Season - Week 22

First ever Superbowl overtime

Commiserations to Craig who saw his Falcons not even have a chance to score in overtime. To be honest I’m still quite shocked by the result. How did Atlanta blow a 25 point lead with just 17 minutes left? And how did they not extend their 7 point lead to two scores when they had a 1st and 10 on the Pats 22 yard line with just 4:40 left. They could have forced New England to use all three time outs and kicked a field goal from 40 yards with just 4 minutes remaining and been up by 10. But they didn’t and Tom Brady won his fourth Superbowl MVP as he threw for a Superbowl record 466 yards and James White scored 20 points including his 2 yard TD run in overtime to give the Patriots (inc. Brady & Belichick) their 5th Superbowl win in 7 games in the last 16 years. BUMSBowl XXI Congratulations to Craig who won the BUMSBowl and so became the third owner to do the double. Leamington were ahead 15-10 with 17 minutes left in regulation and when Brady threw a TD for Langley, Craig replied with a Gostkowski field goal to keep the lead at 5 points. When Brady hit Amendola with 5:56 left Langley closed within 2. The aforementioned Bryant field goal try, that looked on with 4 minutes to go would have put Langley 1 point ahead but some poor play calling by Kyle Shanahan saw a sack, a 10 yard holding penalty and an incompletion losing 23 yards and so Matt Bosher punted. That led to New England’s 91 yard drive and 2 point conversion to send the game into overtime. Brady’s pass to White with 1:21 to go would again have put Langley ahead but White was tackled on the 1 yard line. White ran in on the next play and when Brady hit Amendola for the Superbowl tying 2 point conversion Craig’s lead was down to one. In overtime Chief had one more chance to win as Brady threw fifteen yards to Martellus Bennett on the goal-line but Pass Interference prevented Bennett from holding the ball and so Brady was denied his third TD pass and White ran the ball in on the next play to break Falcons hearts and Leamington held on to defeat Langley 18-17, giving Craig his first BUMSBowl win while Chief is now 3 and 3 in the big game. Supergames Chief did soften the blow of losing to Craig by a point in BUMSBowl XXI by winning £15 after he won the predictions by quarter, half-time score and shared the full-time winning score with Andy H. Cheryl won £6 after predicting Matt Bryant would score first and Marcus put together the best team with Ryan, Bryant, Freeman, Blount, Bennett and Hooper scoring 22 points. Superfood Also a huge thanks to Cheryl as always for a Super Bowl feast of Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Cookies from New England washed down by Coca Cola from Atlanta to fortify the five fans in attendance through to 4am. Cheryl on behalf of all BUMS that have attended across the season can I say a huge thank you for all the fine food you have prepared, and the same goes to Johnnie our other host this season.
